Don Reynold's used passages from books that were funny to help break the ice. These passages later helped him make his point in his presentation. Using examples or quotes from books help when presenting material to others.
By the age of 10, a person is pretty much set in there ways, but it is not necessarily permanent. People have Significant Emotional Events in their lives that help change them.
Think about the words you use. Such as using the word Story Time as opposed to Story Hour.
Be aware of what's going on in your community, and the world.
Be aware of your and your staff's person vices.
There is really no such thing as neutrality, but be as neutral as you can be.
Make sure your library has a policy and become familiar with it.
Your libraries collection of books should reflect your communities needs and wants.

I also learned about the term Radical Militant Librarian.
I had already heard Lynette Sloan speak about the history of libraries, twice before. I did learn a little about the set up of who answers to whom.
I am a picky eater, so I was afraid there wouldn't be anything I'd eat here, but there was a variety of food.
The Girl Scout motto is to Be Prepared, luckily I brought Dr. Pepper's with me, since they don't serve them here. My favorite Girl Scout song is Make New Friends, I've certainly been trying to do that today because it's hard to drive almost 300 miles away from home and not know anyone.
I noticed one of my table mates had their room key on their name tag, so I put mine there also. It is a lot easier to keep up with and use that way.
September is Deaf Awareness Month.

I am glad that I wasn't the only one that had never heard the term Radical Militant Librarian. This was a fascinating bit of history. The entire pictorial history was delightful.
ReplyDeleteThat's a very good summary of our first day. If I ever have trouble remembering what was said, I only need to come back and read your blog. Making new friends is the best part. We will be able to lean on one another for information and support.
