A. Reference Material's Scavenger Hunt
I tried to be creative with this assignment and not just use the encyclopedia or the dictionary.
1. John Quincy Adams was born July 11, 1767. I found this in the A Volume of the World Book Encyclopedia.
2. The Catskills Mountain are located in the South East Corner of the state of New York Between the Hudson River, the Delaware River, and the Mohawk River. Grapes for wine are grown there. I found this information in the World Almanac Library of the States New York Volume.
3. The MVP of the NBA. The Most Valuable Player of the National Basketball Association in 1968 was Larry Brown. I found this out in a book called Basketball A History of Hoops by Mark Stewart.
4. France, Germany, and the Netherlands border the country of Belgium. This information was found in the Oxford New Concise World Atlas.
5. Two synonyms for slovenly are careless, and disheveled. This information can be found in The Merriam-Webster Thesaurus.
6. Two antonyms for cordial are frigid and disinterested. I got this information from the same Thesaurus as above.
7. "Osmosis" is the tendency of a fluid to pass through a semipermeable membrane into a solution where its concentration is lower, thus equalizing the conditions on either side of the membrane. The came from the Webster's Encyclopedic Dictionary.
8. An interrogative sentence is a sentence that asks a question. I got this answer out of the Hodges' Harbrace Handbook. I got a little creative on where I found this. I could have said I got it from my own brain or I could have gotten it from a dictionary, but I wanted something different and I found it.
9. If I wanted to order pizza I could call Domino's Pizza at 658-6629 or I could call Pizza Hut at 658-4451. These businesses are both located in Bolivar. I got the information from the telephone book. Pizza Hut does not deliver, but Domino's Pizza does. However, I would still have to go pick up my order because Domino's Pizza will not deliver to Whiteville. Ellen's Arcade & Pool will also make pizza's, so I could call her to order one. The number is 254-0333. I could walk to her establishment to get my pizza, if necessary. The number is in the phone book, but the information that she sells pizza is on a flyer we have magnetized to the refrigerator.
10. In The Earth Atlas it shows that the oceans of the earth are the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, and the Antartic Ocean. However, I did look on-line at this question and found out that there is now a 5th ocean called the Southern Ocean. This lets me know that I need to updated this information in my library.
