History of library

This is what I wrote about the library, before coming to the PLMI class.  I am slowly working on a power point of pictures for the library.  I've never did one by myself, so I'm learning.

Library Sign

I bought paint to repaint this sign over a year ago.  Today the job finally got finished.  I helped my future son-in-law brush the rust and fungus or whatever was growing on it before the library opened.  Then he spray painted it.  It took a while.  I bought him lunch for doing the job for me.  I think it looks good now.  Trying to get the small things accomplished.  I've already got a list of things to discuss with the board when we meet again.

Scavenger Hunt's

A.  Reference Material's Scavenger Hunt

I tried to be creative with this assignment and not just use the encyclopedia or the dictionary.

1.  John Quincy Adams was born July 11, 1767.  I found this in the A Volume of the World Book Encyclopedia.

2.  The Catskills Mountain are located in the South East Corner of the state of New York Between the Hudson River, the Delaware River, and the Mohawk River.  Grapes for wine are grown there.  I found this information in the World Almanac Library of the States New York Volume

3.  The MVP of the NBA.  The Most Valuable Player of the National Basketball Association in 1968 was Larry Brown.  I found this out in a book called Basketball A History of Hoops by Mark Stewart.

4.  France, Germany, and the Netherlands border the country of Belgium.  This information was found in the Oxford New Concise World Atlas.

5.  Two synonyms for slovenly are careless, and disheveled.  This information can be found in The Merriam-Webster Thesaurus.

6.  Two antonyms for cordial are frigid and disinterested.  I got this information from the same Thesaurus as above.

7.  "Osmosis" is the tendency of a fluid to pass through a semipermeable membrane into a solution where its concentration is lower, thus equalizing the conditions on either side of the membrane.  The came from the Webster's Encyclopedic Dictionary.

8.  An interrogative sentence is a sentence that asks a question.  I got this answer out of the Hodges' Harbrace Handbook. I got a little creative on where I found this.  I could have said I got it from my own brain or I could have gotten it from a dictionary, but I wanted something different and I found it.

9.  If I wanted to order pizza  I could call Domino's Pizza at 658-6629 or I could call Pizza Hut at 658-4451.  These businesses are both located in Bolivar.  I got the information from the telephone book.  Pizza Hut does not deliver, but Domino's Pizza does.  However, I would still have to go pick up my order because Domino's Pizza will not deliver to Whiteville. Ellen's Arcade & Pool will also make pizza's, so I could call her to order one.  The number is 254-0333.  I could walk to her establishment to get my pizza, if necessary.  The number is in the phone book, but the information that she sells pizza is on a flyer we have magnetized to the refrigerator.

10.  In The Earth Atlas it shows that the oceans of the earth are the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, and the Antartic Ocean.  However, I did look on-line at this question and found out that there is now a 5th ocean called the Southern Ocean.  This lets me know that I need to updated this information in my library.

Professionalism in a Restuarant

The first restaurant my family and I went to when I got back was Krystals.  No one was in line and we stood there for about 10 minutes, before anyone said anything to us.  Finally a young male employee, said someone will be with you in a minute.  I thought that this indicated that he didn't work the cash register and that someone else would have to wait on us.  Finally, he came to the cash register and asked for our order.  He was nice and professional and brought us our food out to our table when it was ready, but come on what was the wait about, especially when what he was doing didn't seem to have to be done right then.  Customers first.  Also while we were there, there was a young female employee sitting at one of the tables eating.  She had her uniform on, that's how I know she was an employee.  When I worked in restaurant years ago, we were not aloud to sit at the tables in our uniforms.  They said it did not look right.  So in my opinion, that is unprofessional.

Day 5

A lot of information was handed out in a very short time.  Being Professional is sort of common sense.  Think about your appearance and manners in front of others and act upon that.  The quote " Think before you act" now has new meaning. Planning is like what you learn in the teaching program to make lesson plans.  Being a leader, manager, and director is the tougher of the lessons learned.  It's not the learning how to do it, it's the applying.  Also having a long term goal when thinking of the library is a little of a stretch for me.  Policy and procedures are something to be looked into.  I already checked and the last time they were updated was 2008, so I need to go over them with the board.  This class gave me a lot more things to think about, as far as what I am suppose to be doing as the director.  I'm glad to know it's ok to think about yourself sometimes and that when the day is done, the day is done.  My driving experience there and back was very scary, but it proved to me that I can do it.  Now that I think about it, I think that's the attitude I'm going to take.  I can do it, just got to keep trying.  Overall it was very tiring.

Day 4

1.  Leadership and management go hand in hand.  Without vision; the project will fail.  This concept has been around since the Bible times.  Management is the base of leadership.  Applying management leads to leadership.  But don't forget to do this in a professional way.  Professionalism includes taking care of yourself.  In other words take time to smell the roses.

2.  To get anything done properly you must have a plan of action, organize the plan and the workers, direct the workers, and be in control.  Control is not necessarily a bad word.  Always plan for the unexpected to happen.  If it can happen, it will happen. (especially to Glenda.  LOL)

Day 3

1. What surprised you?

It was a big surprise how attitudes changed.  Attitudes changed from being task origin to being people in origin.

2.  What touched you?

It touched me that 2 different stories both starting out sad could turn out making you feel good about yourself.

3.  What inspired you?

This exercise made me realize that it is the little things in life that makes a person feel good and you never know when something you do can have a impact on someone.  What inspired me is that I need to focus more on the positive than the negative and that I need to compliment people more and be more aware of what's going on around me.  Also that I need to take time for myself and that it is not selfish to do that, because if I don't I will get burnt out.

Day 2

1.  I am very energetic.  I enjoy helping people especially with genealogy or computer technology if I know how. I am a story teller, I have stories about just about everything. I am more of a hands on person, meaning I am a doer not an assigner of tasks.

2.  I need to assign more tasks to my staff.  I was already working on the outside appearance of the library before I left and I need to get that finished when I get back.  I had already starting dressing better and fixing my hair before I left and I am going to continue to do so and even try to improve on that.  I am going to be a more active listener to my patrons and staff.  I am going to more staff meetings with an agenda, as opposed to having random meetings.  I also need to have more confidence in myself.

Interview:

                                                                             Bambi

When I think of the name Bambi, I think of the cute little cartoon deer.  I feel the Bambi I met has deer like qualities.
Bambi  was married at the age of 18 right out of high school.  She will have been married for 17 years on the 10th of this month.(August) (loyalty)
Bambi is a mothering, nurturing type of person.  She has 4 children, 2 girls and 2 boys.  Her daughters are 20 and 7 and her sons are 16 and 8.  The oldest son just turned 16 on the 6th of this month. (August)  Her youngest daughter is adopted.  The child belonged to her sister.  Bambi's sister passed away after a years hospitalization and the child had lived with her during this time.  So she and her husband adopted her.  Bambi likes to have family nights with the children.  She likes to play board games and video games with them.  Her favorite video game is Mario.  She also likes to watch cartoons with the children.  Her favorite cartoon is Loony Toons. (Motherly)
Bambi stated that she is a Country Bumpkin.  She likes grits, biscuits and gravy, but she would never eat a raccoon.  She said she made a meat loaf one night that tasted so good her husband bought her a new Ford F150 truck. She had always wanted one. (Country)
Bambi doesn't like coffee, but she is addicted to this new coffee delight that comes in a carton in the refrigerated aisle.  You shake it up and pour it over ice.  The weirdest thing she's ever ate was a fried cheddar cheese larvae.  It tasted like a popcorn hull with powered cheese on it. (Earthy)
Bambi has blond  natural curly hair.  She has a tattoo that she wishes she didn't have and wants to have removed.  She woke up one morning at the age of 19 and just decided she would get one.  The reason she doesn't like it is because it really has no meaning to her.  It has no significance in her life.  Her mother just got a tattoo with the name of her sister and the birth and death date on it.  This has a significance to her and her mother. (Sentimental)
Bambi's favorite color is pink.  One day her little boy told her that pink was his favorite color too.  She asked him why and he said because it stands for breast cancer awareness.  He went on to say but that didn't mean he wanted the things in his room colored pink.
She likes animals, but from a distance.  She has a fear of most animals.  So she has no pets. (Timid)
Bambi works at a Library in the Ocee River Region.  The most important thing I learned about Bambi is that she has grand mal seizures.  She has a scare on her head from when she had a seizure and fell in the bathroom. She had to have 6 staples put in her head.  Her little boy was concerned about who was going to look out for her while she was away this week.
I assured I would check on her.
When I read what Bambi wrote, it was funny and sweet.  When I got home my daughter wanted to know which picture was Bambi.  I told her to guess and to think about a deer.  She picked out the right one the first time.

Day 1

Don Reynold's used passages from books that were funny to help break the ice.  These passages later helped him make his point in his presentation.  Using examples or quotes from books help when presenting material to others.
By the age of 10, a person is pretty much set in there ways, but it is not necessarily permanent.  People have Significant Emotional Events in their lives that help change them.
Think about the words you use.  Such as using the word Story Time as opposed to Story Hour.
Be aware of what's going on in your community, and the world.
Be aware of your and your staff's person vices.
There is really no such thing as neutrality, but be as neutral as you can be.
Make sure your library has a policy and become familiar with it.
Your libraries collection of books should reflect your communities needs and wants.
     TEL is a database.
I also learned about the term Radical Militant Librarian.
I had already heard Lynette Sloan speak about the history of libraries, twice before.  I did learn a little about the set up of who answers to whom.
I am a picky eater, so I was afraid there wouldn't be anything I'd eat here, but there was a variety of food.
The Girl Scout motto is to Be Prepared, luckily I brought Dr. Pepper's with me, since they don't serve them here.  My favorite Girl Scout song is Make New Friends, I've certainly been trying to do that today because it's hard to drive almost 300 miles away from home and not know anyone.
I noticed one of my table mates had their room key on their name tag, so I put mine there also.  It is a lot easier to keep up with and use that way.
     September is Deaf Awareness Month.
We have a career, not a job.
